In prospective timing, attending to time generally lengthens estimates. A demanding second task diverts resources, so fewer temporal signals are registered and the interval is often underestimated.

Time while you live it is not the same as time when you remember it.

Move the day from repetitive to novel. Notice how the story can reverse between the present and memory.

Its pace may feel fairly ordinary.

A mixture of familiar and distinct moments may give memory several ways to reconstruct it.

This is a thought experiment, not a diagnostic. Real judgements also depend on emotion, attention, age, context and how a question is asked.

Give the difference a name

Prospective timing

You know you will judge the time.

Attention to passing time becomes important. Waiting and clock watching often belong here.

Retrospective timing

You judge the time afterwards.

Memory becomes important. You infer duration from what changed and what you can retrieve.

The terms sound technical. The distinction is ordinary: living through a day and looking back on it are different acts of mind.

Watching the clock can lengthen an interval. Being absorbed can shorten it.

Boredom, fear, pleasure and anticipation alter arousal and what receives attention.

Looking back, we reconstruct duration from change, novelty and remembered events.

What are you expecting next?

The mind continually prepares for what may happen, bringing possible futures into the present.

Can you shape or leave the moment?

Chosen time can feel different from time that is imposed, even when the clock duration is identical.

None works alone. Fear changes attention. Attention changes memory. Agency changes emotion. The experience is made by their relationship.

The future is psychologically present

Think of an email you are waiting to receive.

Not here

The event has not happened.

Already felt

Hope or dread changes the present.

Already shaping action

You check, prepare, postpone or rehearse.

Anticipation is not simply thinking about later. It is one way the future becomes active now.

A distributed science

Current research studies timing across perception, action, memory, emotion and the body. No single mechanism explains every scale or experience.

Where understanding stands now

There is no single experience of time and no single mechanism that makes it.

Multiple scales

Sub-second sensory timing, seconds-to-minutes interval timing, passage-of-time experience and autobiographical time are related, but cannot be assumed to use one mechanism.

Distributed timing

Timing recruits distributed cortico-striatal, cerebellar, premotor and sensory systems. Neural populations can encode elapsed time through changing states, sequences, oscillations and ramping activity.

Scalar variability

Across many interval-timing tasks, error grows roughly in proportion to the interval being judged. This timescale invariance is one robust property that models must explain.

Different questions

Estimating duration, judging how quickly time seems to pass, detecting sequence and remembering an episode are distinct tasks. Results from one should not be casually generalised to another.

Models, not little clocks

Pacemaker-accumulator models remain useful formal descriptions. State-dependent networks, predictive processing and population clocks offer alternatives. No account explains every scale.

Context remains causal

Psychology can explain how waiting is experienced without treating imposed delay as a cognitive defect. Power, workload, pain and uncertainty are part of the mechanism because they shape attention, arousal and control.

What this changes

Your experience of time is not a faulty copy of the clock.

It is information about attention, emotion, memory, expectation and control.

The feeling that time is dragging, vanishing or closing in is not always an instruction to act. It is first something to interpret.
